A tropical depression off Africa formed into the season’s latest tropical storm Saturday even as Tropical Storm Ophelia weakened slightly.
The center of Tropical Storm Maria is expected to pass well east of the Bahamas.
Tropical Storm Maria is being battered by wind shear just north of Puerto Rico. The system was crawling west at just 2 mph and the National Hurricane Center said the unexpected weaking introduced an element of uncertainty in the forecast track.
