Tourists and residents in the Turks and Caicos Islands retreated to their homes and hotels on Tuesday as Hurricane Irene barreled toward the British territory.
Punishing winds from Hurricane Irene howled over Turks and Caicos and the sparsely populated islands of the southeastern Bahamas as residents huddled in darkened homes, hotels and public buildings.
Some tourists caught the last planes out of the Bahamas on Wednesday while others remained behind with residents and prepared for what was expected to be a rough night as large and powerful Hurricane Irene threatened to deliver punishing winds and floods to the low-lying chain of islands.
No immediate reports of injuries or deaths, but damage is extensive on smaller islands
The head of the National Emergency Management Agency in the Bahamas says he is getting what he calls disturbing initial reports of damages from Hurricane Irene in two southern islands.
